國立故宮博物院在慶祝建院八十週年之際，出版本書，包涵了「院史沿革」、「認識故宮」、「靜觀故宮」、「展望故宮」等四個單元，希望藉由這本導讀，加深讀者對故宮的瞭解。故宮於進入二十一世紀之後，在展覽、教育工作中，特將故宮珍藏的珍貴藝術文物，經由科技整合的研究取向以及數位科技之運用，一一展現在世人面前，期許得到更深入的瞭解，也可以為創造二十一世紀的新文化做出更多的貢獻。
